| Out on the Kalahari with our Bushmen friends Jumanda Gakelebone and Roy Sesana. Their knowledge of the land was so helpful in directing us through our journey, giving depth to the experience. They are among those currently being beaten and jailed (see current situation.)
The Kalihari Desert is alive with animals, bird life, light, and balance. It spans about 360,000 square miles. It covers 70% of Botswana. The Kalahari has a number of game reserves. This is the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Animals that live in the region include brown hyenas, lions, meerkats, several species of antelope (including the oryx or gemsbok), and many species of bird and reptile. Vegetation in the Kalahari consists mainly of grasses and acacias but there are over 400 identified plant species present (including the wild watermelon or tsamma melon). This is where the Bushmen/San people want to live. |
