A lovely collection of songs from the 30's and 40's. Holly speaks about why she recorded these songs: "I remember the songs my parents sang around the house when I was growing up. Dad would often come in from the barn and take my mom in his arms for a graceful spin around the kitchen before taking off his muddy boots. Watching them in each other's arms at the Grange Hall dances reassured me there was love in the world, as the sweet love songs of the '30s, '40s and '50s reached for a lightness of heart in the midst of social and political unrest. (My folks also played recordings by Paul Robeson, Marc Blitzstein, and The Weavers. That's how come I turned out so good!) The definitive recordings of this era have already been performed by Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Julie London, Peggy Lee, Della Reese, Judy Garland, Johnny Mathis, and on and on. So why sing them again? To keep them alive, to keep some sweet innocence in our revolution, to share them with our parents–those who have disapproved of us, those who have envied us, and those who have mentored us. Without lush orchestration or extended rehearsal, John, Leslie and I went into a lovely small rural studio and recorded for three days. There were moments when I doubted my decision to do this project. On the third day when my mother came in to listen, the pleasure it brought her displaced my doubt. So, for our parents who danced in the kitchen, for the little ones to whom we will sing these songs as lullabies, for our lovers with whom we get too complicated, for those intimate moments when we need Rodgers and Hart to help us keep it simple, and for all the great writers and singers from whom I learned these songs, there is a song in my heart. HN"
